Default Neon Genesis Evangelion Question

I am about to complete watching the 26 episode main series, and I want to watch
the additional movies. I am wondering if it is necessary to see Death and
Rebirth if I've seen the whole 26 episode set, since Death and Rebirth is a
synopsis of episodes 1-24 and the first 30 minutes of End of Evangelion.
Should I skip Death and Rebirth, or does it sort of "bridge" episodes 1-24 and
End of Evangelion in a way that I need to see to appreciate End of Evangelion?
Also, does anyone have any opinions on which is the "real" ending (please no
spoilers past episode 17, which I just finished watching). Thank you.

I'm told Death and Rebirth (which I have, but have yet to watch) ties up
some loose ends that the original series did not.

As for the "real" ending I don't see how I can comment if you haven't
seen past episode 17 and hence have not seen one of the two endings.

"Stilgar, do we have wormsign?"
"Usul, we have wormsign the likes of which even Poe has never seen!"

I watched the first three episodes then gave up because it sucked.

(please no

Sadly, though, the first ending seemed to make a bit more sense.

When did you come to this conclusion?

The first 30 minutes of End of Evangelion are the best and most
comprehensible of that movie, so you're better off not skipping it.

no

Well, it's pretty hard to clarify that opinion without spoiling anything.
But like it's been stated already, both endings are "real." One was done
out of necessity, because (I think) the budget ran out way too early, which
would explain the last angel fight (which really tests your patience at one
point) and the almost total lack of animation in episodes 25 and 26. There
are a few theories on why the movie was done--I think fan outcry is the one
most touted.

from discussing it endlessly, but what do I know].

No matter how hard you try, you may never top that weird "you're
accepting educational grants so you can steal credit for The Megan
Project" thing. I'm still puzzling over that one.
