FF8: Magic exchanging problems (SPLIT)

I'm having problems exchanging magic. I always get the message showing how
much I'm going to exchange when I try to use SPLIT. For example, Squall has
99 cures, Riona has 35 cures...that's an even divide of splitting 64 as 32 &
32, leaving them with 67 each. But the screen comes up showing 99 & 35 &
then nothing happens.

How do I properly SPLIT magic among the party?

When the SPLIT option comes onto the screen, choose split, and then
use the left/right directional buttons to move up and down in units of
ten.
