Default next Zelda on Wii in a state of flux, may or may not happen

E3 2007: Aonuma and Miyamoto on Next Wii Zelda
Some ideas are being thrown around, but don't expect a sequel anytime
soon.
by Matt Casamassina
July 12, 2007 - The launch of Twilight Princess with the Wii was a
first for Nintendo, which has never delivered a Zelda game so early in
the life cycle of a new console. So does that mean fans may not be
treated to another Zelda project, this time developed exclusively for
Wii? Well, at the very least, it looks like it's going to be awhile,
Speaking with IGN Wii, Twilight Princess director Eiji Aonuma and
Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto collectively indicated that while
some ideas are being tossed around for a new Wii Zelda project,
nothing is very far along, or set in stone.

Asked if Twilight Princess would be Wii's last Zelda, Aonuma said, "I
can't say, but I guess for now, maybe, yeah [laughs]. Not to say that
it's going to be the final game. There's still a lot of potential with
the Wii so there's still a possibility that there could be another
Zelda for it. We do have some ideas in the works, but I can't say for
sure because none of them have been approved and we're still very much
in the planning process, so I hope you look forward to whatever comes
out."

While Twilight Princess performed under expectations in Japan, the
newly released DS title, Phantom Hourglass, is selling very well, and
Nintendo is taking notice of gamers' reactions. "The Phantom Hourglass
has been released in Japan and reception has been very, very
positive," said Aonuma. "We've actually been able to receive feedback
from the users and we'll definitely take all of those comments into
consideration when creating the next Zelda, whether it be for Wii or
DS."

Shigeru Miyamoto elaborated on the likelihood of another Wii Zelda.
"It's really hard to say because we've never had a Zelda that's
appeared so early in the life cycle of the system, so it's definitely
possible that there would be another Zelda on Wii," he said. "Of
course, the challenge is that typically a Zelda game is something that
takes three years to develop, so we'll just have to wait and see."

__________________________________________________ ________________

this is slightly disheartening because last word from Nintendo was
that Zelda Wii had been in development for over a year, would
completely change what we thought of Zelda games, but seemed to be
going forward. now, who knows.

sounds like if Zelda Wii does happen, it'll be late the Wii's
lifecycle or get pushed to the next console. so I'd say, forget that
unconfirmed 2009 release date.

Default next Zelda on Wii in a state of flux, may or may not happen

Wii version may have had a year in developement by itself, but the GC
version (of which Wii version is based on) has been in development for
far longer. Remmeber, it was originally slotted for launch in early
'05 and pushed back several times.

Most people probably don't recall, but Zelda II for the NES/Famicom
was pushed back several times and released almost 2 years past
original expectations, so yes. It takes a long time to develop a
Zelda game. This isn't anything new.

ok sorry you're not understanding what I said, probably because I
wasn't clear enough. my fault. lemme explain

I was not talking about Twilight Princess on Wii. I was talking about
the NEXT console Zelda game, previously known as Zelda Revolution. A
game that Nintendo (and/or the gaming press) said months ago, had been
in development for Wii, for a year+

Twilight Princess on Gamecube started development, who knows, anywhere
from 2000-2003. So that's before or during Wind Waker's development,
or just after WW development ended. Yeah I know, the Wii version of
Twilight Princess was in development for a year or so since the
release was pushed from late 2005 to late 2006.

Again, nothing to do with Twilight Princess on Wii -- in 2005 IGN
and Nintendo said that Zelda Revolution was in development- in 2006 it
was reported that a new Zelda was in development specifically for
Wii. Nintendo also said that Twilight Princess would be the last
Zelda of its kind (TP still uses the gameplay formula used in Ocarina
of Time)... so this new Zelda for Wii was not TP.

thanks, I didn't know Zelda II for Famicom/NES had been pushed back --
since the only source of game info I had back then was VG&CE, EGM,
Game Players, and by the time I started reading Nintendo Power, Zelda
II had already been released in the U.S.

It sounds to me like it's not in production at all, and whatever preliminary
bit they were working on a 1-2 years ago was shelved when they decided to
create a Wii version of Twilight Princess.

I'd love to see a new IP from Nintendo in the adventure/RPG format. The Wii
is going to have a very large install base, so it's a good time to expand
their lineup rather than cater solely to the built in Nintendo fanbase.

I bet they learned though..

The GC version was ported and mirrored for the wii..

For all we know, the GC version was a whole new deal, and the epic one for
wii, or something later, could have been produced for years on end..

TP might just be a "rip" off the epic one..
Thye did not even bother orcestrating it..
