Basically, your squawk is your radar identification.

Punch the four digit number into your transponder.

Ok, what is a transponder?? I have had all the flight sims but I
have never gotten too deep into it. Im learning slowly.
I dont have the real time to learn like a pro...

The transponder is a 4-digit radio system on the radio stack (2nd from
bottom in the Cessna 172 and other aircrafts which use the same radio
stack). It transmits the 4-digit ID into the air so that they can
identify you on the radar in the tower.

When you are registered for flight following (manually by requesting
Flight Following from the center; automatically when you take off after
you received clearance) you receive that code from the controler on
initial contact, when you aknowledge it is automatically entered into
the transponder for you by the simulator, but you could enter it
manually by punching the numbers in order using the buttons just below
the transponder. Once the number is entered the controler will inform
you that they receive radar contact.

When you are not using flight following you enter 1200 which basically
means that you are using VFR and own navigation.

Old airplanes whitout a transponder cannot be followed on the radar, but
I think this is not modeled in the simulator (I think all airplaines
have a transponder, eventhough it is not visible because it shouldn't be
there), and I'm pretty sure you are not allowed to fly in controled
airspace in the real world without a working transponder.

Hope this helps

Actually requirements for flying into Class C and Class D airspace (medium
and small airport controlled airspace) only required that you contact ATC
before entering. Class B airspace (big airports like MIA, LAX, TPA, etc.)
require that you have not only a transponder but that it has altitude
sensing capabilities (I think that makes it a "Class C" transponder in FAA
jargon.)

Sometime before 25 Jan 2004, jethro stated:

In the example you cited, the tower would have given you an altimiter
setting first (2952) then a squawk code after it. Probably something like
1200.

The learning center and flying lessons in FS2002 and 2004 are a great place
to get started with basic information about ATC, radio communications, and,
more importantly, controlling the aircraft.

Dr. Bob, regarding US regulations, Tom is correct. "Unless other
authorized by ATC," a mode C transponder is required to operate an aircraft
in class C airspace.

Below are the pertinent regulations.
